Year Overview & January’s Outlook
2018’s Grand Opening – Two Supermoons!
How did you go with the Supermoon at the beginning of January, which was number two of a trilogy of Full Moon Supermoons in a row. The third will be on 31 January, giving another opportunity to galvanise the emotional breakthroughs of these intensified Full Moons! If this feels more like a bowel cleanse than a fun outpouring of creativity, stay with the process until the insights come clear. Your deep understandings will ultimately get you more on track for your best decisions for your 2018 goals.
And what a year ahead – the astrology of 2018 is powerful! The year starts with Saturn, Black Moon Lilith and Pluto all in Capricorn, a formidable trio until August when Black Moon Lilith changes sign. So the first half of the year is shaped by this earth trio, bringing attention to practicalities, work, duties, time management and themes of ‘who’s the boss?’
Saturn, Pluto & Black Moon Lilith in Capricorn
One moment you might feel as if someone is trying to control you with their way of running their world, but next moment you realise that person’s controlling ways are a walk in the park compared to the next lot of controlling rules you meet. At the end of the day, it’s all about holding your own inner authority and assessing and improving your own values and sense of what is right and worthy as a code of conduct to follow.
Most of us go through our days putting effort into creating a good balance between work, duty, contributions to family, employers, community and so on, plus looking after the physical structures of our homes, bodies and bank balances, and we hope to achieve something tangibly rewarding from all this effort (Capricorn).
But sometimes it feels as if either ourselves or others sabotage or undermine this, often unknowingly, inadvertently, accidentally, unconsciously or subconsciously, for hidden emotional or soul reasons (Scorpio). Sometimes we even do this knowingly, but feel justified or can’t stop it even if we want to because the habit is entrenched (a challenge of Scorpio-Capricorn combined).
Scorpio & Capricorn – Sabotage or Success?
Many people are afraid of, or disillusioned about, trying to succeed because they’ve had past experiences of sabotage, either from within the self (e.g. not being able to give up a bad habit) or externally (e.g. feeling controlled by someone or something else). While Saturn, Lilith and Pluto are in Capricorn, it’s an opportunity to find new ways to build, grow and thrive even among energies of fear, failure, not enough time, grief and so on. Grabbing onto the intensive energy of this trio can bring significant breakthroughs even out of the most stuck patterns.
Making a commitment to really hear and listen to new ideas, opinions, methods and points of view, and being sensible about which philosophies to follow are all key this year, and this month in particular Mercury’s energies (early Nov 2017 to end Jan 2018), plus the energies of the Full Moon Supermoons (Dec 2017 to end Jan 2018) help snap us out of automated perceptions and reactions so we can clearly see whether we are putting our hard yakka into the right endeavours and relationships.
April & May – Chiron & Uranus Make Moves
April and May bring significant changes when Chiron shifts out of Pisces into Aries and Uranus shifts out of Aries into Taurus. Chiron shifting into Aries helps heal and integrate the past 8 years of Uranus’s era-changing transit through Aries which catapulted some to success and others to disenfranchised distress at the rapid takeover of the world by Smart Technology and social media.
What will Uranus revolutionise next during its 8 years moving through Taurus from May 2018 until 2026? Taurus is the zodiac sign of money, assets, homes, possessions, bodies, the earth, sustainability and the practicalities of relationships.
Venus & Mars both go Retro in 2018!
In 2018 both Mars and Venus go Retro, not a common thing in the one year – Mars in Aquarius mid-year and Venus in Scorpio in Oct/Nov. Mercury does its usual three times a year retrograde, this year in March, July and November.
Interestingly, Venus holds onto the Scorpio energy that Jupiter leaves behind in November; i.e. Jupiter is in Scorpio until November this year, but Venus goes Retro in Scorpio in October 2018 extending the Scorpio themes for us right through until December. Saturn and Pluto extend the Capricorn themes all year.
Superpower Versus Stagnation
In general 2018 provides a strong combination of both Scorpio and Capricorn, and their common keywords are ‘control’, ‘power’, ‘growth’ and ‘stagnation’. How can there be both ‘growth’ and ‘stagnation’? These two zodiac signs can get stuck, but when they get going, they grow and grow and the results can be tremendous.
This is a bit like the energy of two superpowers interacting… one in the water element (Scorpio) and the other in the earth element (Capricorn). It’s a great opportunity for focus, determination, pushing through obstacles, paring back to essentials, seeing with deeper eyes and composting old attitudes about right or wrong into the beauty and wisdom that emerge from commitment to relating, presence and being.
Jupiter Square Nodes all January – Big!
January kicks off 2018 with a big focus on the Jupiter in Scorpio energy because Jupiter squares the Nodes all month! This pulls our souls in all kinds of directions, so it’s helpful that in general for many people it’s still the holiday season giving time to explore or think about the deeper soul synchronicities and opportunities that Jupiter ignites.
The Nodes are soul signposts, helping us ‘meet at the crossroads’ with soul longings, soul mates and soul projects in the comings and goings of our life direction decisions. Should we go North, South, East or West? This alignment has the feeling of an extended Christmas with the idea of ‘I’ll be home for Christmas’, when people who have belonged together in the past or who are family and have been travelling along different compass points do their best to transit back and forth to be with each other.
How Are Your Soul Signposts?
Jupiter is all about travellers and hospitality, so Jupiter squaring the Nodes all of January also has the feeling of an extended New Year’s Eve and the ancient song ‘Auld Lang Syne’. Often loved ones travel on individual paths over the course of a year, or years, and might even be lost or wandering, but the song ‘Auld Lang Syne’ shows the Jupiter impetus toward extending generosity even to those who have hurt us or strayed… taking a moment in time to look with fresh eyes to see what can be forgiven or if new pathways can be woven with kindred spirits.
The phrase ‘auld lang syne’ means ‘old long since’ or ‘remembering friends & fond times.’ The song asks:
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?
In our fast feverish get-over-it-and-move-on 21st century culture with million dollar firework displays replacing linking arms and singing at midnight, in case we risk answering ‘yes old fond times should be forgot’, the Scorpio & Capricorn energies this year have us rethinking, and Jupiter square Nodes throughout January does the same.
Bring Your Kindness Cup
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And surely you’ll bring your pint cup!
and surely I’ll bring mine!
And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
Have you ever thrown out something sentimental that later you regretted, or held onto so many sentimental things your home became a clutter-jungle? We do this in our relationships too, and in January, our balance comes to light. Some people are ‘too’ Scorpio-Capricorn and won’t let go. Others are ‘not enough’ Scorpio-Capricorn and rush ahead without realising they are chopping off connections that their heart will later mourn over.
Old Loves – Reconnect or Disconnect?
We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since auld lang syne.
The pull to reconnect or disconnect with Jupiter square Nodes all of January also goes for departed loved ones who have passed away, or those who live in different countries or who have changed a lot. How can we connect with them, with their souls, and hear their stories, as if in the pub having a pint or two with the versions of themselves that we connected with. What advice would they give us? What would we give them?
We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.
January is a powerful month to connect in with soul moods and see if any missing pieces of our life’s puzzles, our own souls, our own selves, can be reclaimed or retrieved, like keys that open vibrant new vistas if we stay present to the richness of another soul, another being, and what they taught us or gifted us with even if they are no longer with us, nor relating to us as regularly or as similarly or freely as they once did.
Mars Conjunct Jupiter Square Nodes all January too!
And there’s a hand my trusty friend!
And give me a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.
And that was the last verse of Auld Lang Syne! At some point the last verse has to be sung in all our life’s songs, and people must part ways and walk their separate paths. This draws to mind how Mars is conjunct Jupiter (exact on the 7th & 8th) throughout the month, therefore also squaring the Nodes. For virtually all of January Mars and Jupiter are conjunct in Scorpio (until the 26th when Mars enters Sagittarius), and the days when they are both most strongly squaring the Nodes as a duo are 1st to 12th January.
So here’s the rub… Mars conjunct Jupiter square the Nodes brings opportunities to see where connections are still passionate, exciting, full of shared vision, eros and drive. Even if the spark is not 100% lit, is there enough of a percentage to continue? In many cases if there is not a strong enough spark, the addition of Mars to this powerful January alignment might bring ultimate closure to connections that now belong to other times; another era.
What’s Your Spark Up To?
In other cases, it brings an awareness that one party might feel a 50% spark whereas the other only feels a 10% spark. It might then be up to the one who feels the 50% spark to keep lighting the fire and find ways to keep exciting and reminding the other of their unique chemistry to see whether both fires can burn similarly again or whether the connection can still be honoured.
The Mars plus Jupiter to Nodes alignment over January ultimately brings a yearning to dream your biggest dreams, hope your biggest wishes, and scan your future path; and to collect your trusty band of fellow travellers for your year’s journey, seek the right mentors, teachers, courses, jobs, homes, neighbourhoods, hobbies, friends, inner circle etc; and to keep exploring and adventuring, seeking and researching, leaving no stone unturned in efforts at self-understanding and understanding of others so that you can discern right connections and right goals.
If over January you’re finding it hard to focus on normal tasks and are hopping about looking for distractions, it’s not just the holiday season! It’s also the deeper Mars-Jupiter-Nodes soul need for future-shaping. This is amplified even more greatly by what Mercury is up to, Mercury being the planet of perception, messages and communication.
Mercury – OMG! Communication!
Communication issues are flying about like livewires all through January even though Mercury went Direct just before Christmas on the 23rd. Communication challenges, as well as opportunities, are likely to take up a lot of attention until the end of the month. For a start, Mercury doesn’t leave the Retro shadow phase until 11 January. Next Mercury doesn’t leave Sagittarius also until 11 January, which means we’ve been in the ‘life learnings’ of Mercury in Sagittarius for two months.
Essentially Mercury in Sagittarius as an energy tends to have difficulty seeing beyond its own belief systems and seeks those with similar beliefs or tries to convert others to those beliefs. Even when it questions its own beliefs, it does so through the filters of its own beliefs! No matter how kind or well-intentioned, it can have a hard time making sense of new information outside its beliefs, or even understanding why others do not understand it, as the words other people use are heard and understood through the filter of already pre-existing beliefs and reaction patterns.
No, I’m Not Referring to Sagittarians BTW!
We all have the Sagittarius energy within us somewhere, so since 6 November when Mercury went into Sagittarius life has been highlighting parts of ourselves that are blind to other people’s beliefs and therefore needs. For example, Mercury in Sagittarius might believe that to be a loving human, it’s important to pray for family and friends three times a day, and therefore has an expectation that others will do the equivalent for it and feels distressed and neglected if others do not.
What are your expectations and hidden inner rules about the right way to be a loving human being? What would really annoy you if your family or friends neglected to do it? A bit like standing in another person’s shoes, or using different filters on a Smart phone camera to get different views and shots of the same image, Mercury in Sagittarius has tried to get us to see things through another person’s perspective and to understand that even if we have said things in clear English, another person’s filters might mean they still do not understand, even though they and we have thought they have understood and they might even have said they understood!
Mutual Understanding Conquers Double-Edged Swords
It’s important at this time to keep checking there has been mutual understanding so that over the course of this year with the potential stagnation downside of the Scorpio-Capricorn energies, the deep dark pain of misunderstanding does not brew. Images can be taken two ways as can words, which is why language is often referred to as a double-edged sword.
Someone might have sent you a hint, but it might go totally over your head because you are preoccupied, or you interpret it as wry black humour and think your friend is being hilarious and you feel warmer toward them and feel the friendship is full and well and there’s no need to keep lighting its flame, whereas the other person might be waiting for you to make amends with extra effort as if you have a debt to pay off, and they’re doing the emotional equivalent of waiting in a dark alley for you!
Winning Emotional Tattslotto
Sometimes a whole relationship with another person might be about life trying to get a message across… you can’t understand them and they can’t understand you, but in the process of persisting with seeing each other’s points of view, beliefs and needs, special treasured growth happens that fills you both ultimately with a cup of goodwill, no matter how many times you’ve wished to tell them previously where to go! “And surely you’ll bring your pint cup! And surely I’ll bring mine! And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne.”
Some messages once we understand them, even if not winning financial Tattslotto, might bring an experience of winning in other unexpected ways. But let’s not be idealistic either… sometimes even a 1% homeopathic dose of an incompatible communication dynamic is too toxic to handle!
Can We Avoid Spectacular Misunderstandings?
Spectacular misunderstandings or spectacular healings of misunderstandings are possible this month, and in fact, all year. Extending the cup of kindness towards those parts of ourselves or others that were innocently indoctrinated in the first place into problematic beliefs and wrong conclusions can work wonders.
On 11 January Mercury leaves its post-Retro Shadow and moves into Capricorn. On 13 January Mercury makes its final conjunction with Saturn (the third of three – 28 Nov/ 6 Dec/ 13 Jan), the effects of which last until around the 18th. Then straight away from 19th/20th, Mercury enters the orb of Pluto, making an exact conjunction with Pluto on the 23rd and not leaving until the 31st.
So even though Mercury is no longer Retro, and is out of its shadow after 11 January, it seems life still expects us to roll up our sleeves for the rest of the month and keep up efforts to turn around perception, attitude, intention or communication issues to improve relationship and life wellbeing chances all round. Or make decisions to walk away cleanly with no ill feeling, sullying or sulking.
The 31st – Full Moon Blue Moon Supermoon Eclipse in Leo!
On the 31st, January ends with a spectacular Full Moon in Leo, which is also a Blue Moon (i.e. the 2nd Full Moon in the one month) and a Supermoon (the final of three in a row) and a Total Lunar Eclipse! Needless to say, energies will be running hot at this time.
Eclipses can bring great turnarounds, for better or worse. Some people launching or celebrating at this time might have even bigger success than expected because of the eclipse, but others might feel overlooked or eclipsed. It’s hard to know in advance whether an eclipse will be a snakes or ladders experience, so watch your dreams, your intuition, your communication, your conversations, your emotions, your passions all month for a heads-up on how to clear your thoughts and be as centred as possible to prepare. More on eclipses here (Eclipses Defined & Year List), and here (Eclipse Blog).
